| Guinness World Records reports on its website that Dr. Scott Eckert reported a leatherback turtle dove to a depth of 3,973 feet. Dr. Eckert, working near the Virgin Islands in May of 1987, was able to record this amazing feat when he fitted the turtle with a device capable of recording the pressure the animal must withstand as it dives.
The leatherback turtle was given the scientific name of Dermochelys coriacea because of its leathery skin. It is the largest living turtle in the world and can be found wherever there is tropical or temperate waters where it feeds on coldwater jellyfish. Unfortunately, it's an endangered species and needs our help to survive.
