Guiding Questions / Ideas:
- What is a server?
- Why is it important to save student work to the school server?
- Before printing in Internet Explorer, how can you tell how many pages are going to print?
- Is there a way to save paper when printing?
Assessment:
- Students print only the "Selection" instructed and not the whole document
- Students save work to server in their folder and not left in "My Documents"
- Name is included on finished product
Learning Connections:
- The lesson will be of interest to students because it will help them to understand the importance of saving to the server so that they always have access to their files even if their computer is broken.
- No prior knowledge is required.
- Curricular connections regarding educational technology will focus on computer skills such as copying (right click + "Copy") and pasting (right click + "Paste") text and pictures, accessing the server, print preview, printing a selection, and utilizing more than one program at a time (multitasking).
Learning Activites or Tasks:
- Students will practice highlighting text
- Students will multitask between 2 programs, using the minimize button in Windows
- Students will copy (highlight, then right click on text) and paste (right click) pictures & text onto their document.
- Students will print preview a webpage
- Students will print a selection of text
- Students will access the school server
Teaching Strategies:
The teacher will guide the lesson utilizing the demonstration computer in front of the class in the following order:
- Students will be instructed to double click on Computer Lab Icon (Internet Explorer) on the desktop to open it.
- Students will be instructed to Scroll to bottom of the page and click on the Computer Lab Lessons link.
- Students will be instructed to look for the topic of "Intro to lab: Rules & Resources".
- Students will be instructed to click on the "Introduction" link to get to the lesson.
- Students will be instructed to scroll to the box and type in their first and last name.
- The teacher will go over each item and probe for understanding.
- Students will copy the picture at the top of the webpage.
- Students will be instructed to minimize Internet Explorer (IE) to get back to the desktop.
- The teacher will instruct the students to open another program: MS Word, Kidspiration.
- Students will be instructed to paste the picture on the document.
- The teacher will ask if the students know any other way to copy and paste:
- right click & choose copy/paste
- from the menu "Edit", then "Copy/Paste"
- control + C to copy, control + v to paste
- Next the students will be asked what the difference is between copying text and pictures (the only difference is that text needs to be highlighted first).
- Students will be reminded to have their name in the box at the top of the webpage because instead of minimizing IE, some students will exit the program, requiring them to re-enter their name.
- The teacher will ask students how many pages do they think this website has. Answers will vary and it's important they understand that before printing, they can find the exact number by choosing "Print Preview".
- Students will be instructed to close the print preview.
- Students will highlight text from the header "Rules & Procedures" to the bottom of the numbered list of rules. If students are unable to highlight text, it's because they did not close out of "Print Preview".
- Students will be instructed to open the "Print" dialog box and choose the "Selection" option before printing.
- Students who print the whole document will be instructed individually as to the correct way to print a selection of text.
- Students who print correctly will be praised for following instruction and saving paper.
Management:
- Students will work individually.
- Students who need extra attention or who won't stay on task will be moved up front by the teacher workstation for more immediate attention.
- The teacher will repeat each step of the demonstration as needed.
Materials and Resources:
- Internet connection
- Internet Browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape
- MS Word
- Kidspiration
- TMS Computer Lab webpage of the introduction lesson
- TMS Computer Lab website icon on each desktop for easy access
- Demonstration computer
