Internet Research

The Internet can be overwhelming when trying to narrow down a search for a particular topic. Besides search engines (which will be covered in a later lesson), there are other valuable tools available to find information and to find it quickly, which we'll explore in these lessons.
  • EBSCO

    • Research I- It's quite handy to be able to search through documents quickly and to be able to copy & paste from one application into another. For this reason, learning to use "hot keys" will be incorporated into this lesson.

Internet Safety

The Internet is a fun place to explore, whether you're using it for researching, communicating, or playing games & music. While there are many advantages to using the Internet, you must be aware of a few rules to keep you and your computer safe while you're online. Below are some activities to help you learn about Internet safety.

Dichotomous Keys

A tool we can use to help us identify something by examining its characteristics. You begin by comparing two descriptions, choosing the one that best describes your object, and moving on to the next set of descriptions until you've discovered what it is. For example, you find an insect. Does it have legs or not? If it has legs, does it have 3 or 4 pairs of legs? If it has 3 pairs of legs, does is have wings or not? If it does have wings, then are the wings leathery or are they hard? You continue with these types of quesitons until you've identified your insect.

Other elements introduced, depending on time, are the thesaurus, spelling, and grammar features, as well as inserting and formatting clipart.
